Americans Lose Touch, Report Fewer Close Friends

Posted on June 23, 2006 by CD

You know, it feels like I’m missing that 3/4’s of a friend more and more, though sometimes, I’m like ‘If I can’t have three whole friends maybe it’s just better to have 2.08 friends’ somehow I can’t seem to give up that less than a tenth of a friend (.08) even though we had so much more when it was more than 9/10s of a friend back in ’85. It’s sort of like I had a friend that was missing an arm in ’85 and now that friend has been reduced to just a section of cranium, maybe only the brain itself. It’s sort of creepy when I think of it that way and it makes me want to just get rid of that .08 of a friend altogether. Sometimes you just have to focus on the whole friends and give up on the partials.

Americans Lose Touch, Report Fewer Close Friends
New research compared studies from 1985 and 2004. On average, each person in 2004 reported 2.08 close friends—those they can discuss important matters with. That’s down from 2.94 people in 1985.

I totally understand. I’ve lost 8.5 friends in 30 years, and 2.1 enemies. Within the past few years however, I
    gained 3.2 friends.
