Parasitic weed seems to smell its prey

Posted on September 28, 2006 by CD

I’ve been doing some gardening lately and I’ve noticed this stuff trying to strangle out my Citronella. I thought gardening in Hawaii would be fairly easy, but there are some mystery pests that come out at night and knock the flower heads off my hibiscus, munch my tender cilantro, stomp my sunflowers, and otherwise destroy plants. I don’t use pesticides, so that makes it twice as hard. The garden is fenced and there are no footprints so I am trying to figure out if it is lizards, snails (stealthy and quick snails), or maybe the secret service.

Parasitic weed seems to smell its prey
The parasitic dodder plant doesn’t have a nose, but it knows how to sniff out its prey. The dodder attacks such plants as tomatoes, carrots, onions, citrus trees, cranberries, alfalfa and even flowers, and is a problem for farmers because chemicals that kill the pesky weed also damage the crops it feeds on.
