Big Island authorities are on a manhunt two inmates who made their escape from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo with bed sheets.
Authorities sent out a warning about the two men on the loose and considered dangerous.
Hilo police are looking for Kyle Keola Quilausing, 31, and Ludivico Lazo, 35.
Just before midnight Tuesday, the two men made their getaway by tying bed sheets together to climb 18 feet to the top of the Punahele Recreation Complex, public safety officials said. Then the inmates broke a window and jumped off the roof to an unfenced area, officials said.
A security guard saw the two running through a church parking lot to Waianuenue Avenue.
Guards immediately locked down the facility and launched a search.
It’s possible one of the men is injured, officials said. “From the pictures that we just reviewed when they broke the window and climbed out there was blood on the wall,” Department of Public Safety spokesman Mike Gaede said.
Quilausing and Lazo were being housed in the recreation complex due to overcrowding issues at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
Quilausing’s Description:
# Height: 5 feet 8 inches tall
# Weight: 145 pounds
# Hair: short, black
# Eyes: brown
Quilausing was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and dark colored pants. He was serving time for auto theft, probation revocation and contempt of court.
Lazo’s Description:
# Height: 5 feet 7 inches tall
# Weight: 140 pounds
# Hair: black
# Eyes: brown
Lazo was last seeing wearing a white T-shirt and dark colored shorts. Lazo was in jail on drug charges.
“Any inmate who has escaped from one of our facilities should be considered dangerous and the public should not approach them. Leave that up to the police,” Gaede said.
Both men have relatives on the Big Island.
Police ask that anyone with information on the whereabouts of either of the men call Hilo police at 961-2213, or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
