Thanks for sharing those experiences. I know it takes all kinds to make up this world, unfortunately, there are rude, inconsiderate people every where we go. I am disappointed to read that about Andrew Zimmern because I really do enjoy watching his show. They always portrayed him as kind, humble, considerate, and respectful.

Hi Vago,

Thanks for sharing those experiences. I've met some expats that absolutely hate tourists, the vast majority however, including even me, tend to want to help people who have open minds and are traveling in a responsible way with respect towards the communities they're guests in. There are a couple of types of tourists however that really are the worst kind of human beings - they show no respect for local customs, expect people to kow-tow towards them, and generally act like real jerks. I can think of two examples right off - an MBA student from New York who I met in China who had the nerve to say at one point 'they're just Chinese....' and a more famous example, celebrity pig Andrew Zimmern who during his time in Morocco rubbed nearly everyone he met the wrong way because of his lack of respect, self righteus attitude, and total disregard for the fact that many people in Morocco speak English and clearly understood his insults. I was fortunate to not have the pleasure of meeting him, but this is what I've heard from quite a few sources and watching his bizarre foods in Morocco, I can definitely see it.

Actually, I probably exaggerated it a little bit Todd. However, I've never traveled outside the US so I haven't had the experience of running into an expat. Great site.

I never thought an expat would have that kind of attitude towards a tourist, since they must have been one themselves at one time. I love this post/thread! I just got back from an agroturismo in Italy. Neil and I were in DEEEP Italian country, wedged between the Appenines and the Adriatic. Vago, I've got some great pix coming your way!
@Colin: I agree with Vago: Quitting is for winners. I quit my cush, tenured teaching job at a "blue ribbon" school in NY. Bah! And now my hubby and I are going to vagabond and write. I'm jealous you're going to Thailand. I haven't been to my homeland in 2 years. Have fun!
@Poppy: I'm from NY and have a few pubs, restaurants in mind for you. LES (lower east side) and Queens are my fav! I've some posts on my blog: worldwinder.com (shameless plug).

Hi Everyone! Hi Vago!<br

I love the images that come to mind when I think about him and King David Kalakaua fishing together. By the way, did you guys know Kalakaua was the first monarch to circumnavigate the globe? He made treaties with over 170 nations (including the USA which later helped to overthrow his sister and then annexed his kingdom.) Kalakaua is my favorite monarch of all time, a renaissance man who loved surfing, symphonies, and fishing for ahi.

In Hawaii too.
